Flea Control
Are you using flea drops on your dog, i.e. Advantge®, Frontline®, Sergeant's®, Hartz®, etc? STOP! There are safe and homeopathic ways to prevent fleas. Topical flea drops can cause skin irritations, breathing problems, tremors, vomiting, neurological problems (nerve damage), and even death. Some animals will experience hair loss and sores around the neck from flea collars or where the topical drops have been applied, plus the chemical fumes given off by these products can negatively affect you and your family as well. Did you know that your dog's liver and kidneys are adversely affected by the use of commercial flea products such as frontline and advantage, chemical de-wormers and even heartworm drugs? The toxic chemicals in these products, often result in renal failure (kidney failure)and/or liver damage to the point of the liver no longer being able to filter the blood and then, complete liver failure. Contaminated blood circulating throughout the body day after day will most definitely contribute to other more complicated health issues, such as diabetes and arthritis to name two of the most common long term side effects of using these toxic chemicals.
These toxic drugs can also cause severe skin rashes, loss of hair, epileptic seizures, brain damage. The list of adverse side effects amazingly goes on and on. Still people continue to use these drugs because they don't know there is a better, simpler, less expensive, safer way.
Whenever a puppies leaves my care, I always warn the new owner on the dangers of flea drops. Often times my warnings fall of deaf ears. In such cases, I may get calls from the new puppy owner asking me if it is normal for their puppy to be shaking, wobbly, and unable to stand. Of course my answer is, "No!". My first question to them is whether or not they are using flea drops on their dog/puppy. Always, the answer is "Yes". Even though I had warned them against using such products, somehow they purchased them and used them anyway. I realize that many vets push this product to new clients. Their office walls are usually littered with ads fro Frontline, Advantage, Flea control chew-ables, Heartworm chew-ables, etc. This is a big money maker for them, apparently. Don't be coerced into putting these poisonous drops on your little pet. By applying this product to your pet, you are also wearing it every time you pet your poor dog. If you have kids, then they are wearing it too. Putting flea drops on your pets is akin to spraying them with RAID®! The same active ingredient in RAID®, is also used in all of these flea drops.
Years ago, we used to own a little mini schnauzer. I thought that putting flea drops on her would be a great idea to prevent any fleas from ever touching her. I purchased Advantage® drops from Petco. After applying the drops to her shoulder blades, she immediately fell to the floor as if she were dead. Hurriedly, I scooped her up off of the floor and began frantically trying to wash off the poison with soap and water. Fortunately, she was later able to stand back on her feet and function as before.
Please, please, please consider using a more natural way to prevent and control fleas. There are several ways to do this. Here are some alternatives to try.
1. Bathe your dog
Dish washing liquid, i.e., Dove, Dawn, etc will kill fleas on contact! There is no need to buy expensive chemical laden fleas shampoos.
Fleas like to hide in orifices like the nose, ears, and ears, so remember to start washing from the head first and then work your way down. Do this 2 days in a row to make sure that you killed them all. If you catch them early-on, then this simple bath should do the trick.
2. Brewer's Yeast with Garlic
Fleas, mosquitoes and vampires all hate garlic. Use this to your advantage to help prevent fleas from infesting your pet. This product can be purchased inexpensively.

3. Essential oils
Plants produce essential oils as their own survival technique to repel bugs This makes essential oils great insect repellents for animals (and humans, too). Essential oils are all natural, mild and will leave your dog's coat healthy and vibrant while working at a cellular level to boost the immune system. For centuries, they have been used in a variety of ways to repel fleas, ticks and other biting insects. Some of the more common oils that act as flea and insect repellents are: lavender, citronella, cedar ,peppermint, eucalyptus and lemongrass.

Heart Worm
Do you have a Heartworm issue in your area? Are you giving your dog Heartworm medication anyway? Please research this subject online before giving your dog any medication. My vet has been doing business for 45 years. He told me that he has seen Heartworm 6 times in all of his career as a veterinarian, including autopsies. This is not as big a problem as we are being led to believe, especially in the NW. Heartworm medication can have serious side effects.
